Minnesota’s Lucia vs Penn State’s Gadowsky At Alaska – Fairbanks

=============================================================

There are only half a dozen men’s ice hockey head coaches in the Big Ten Conference but, as matters stand at present, one-third of the six were actually given their very first opportunity to pilot an NCAA Division I program by the University of Alaska at Fairbanks.

It is rather difficult to directly compare the collegiate track records of current Minnesota Golden Gophers mentor Don Lucia and Penn State Nittany Lions bench boss Guy Gadowsky at the University of Alaska – Fairbanks if only for the simple fact that the Nanooks were still not yet members of the crack Central Collegiate Hockey Association when Lucia, the former University of Notre Dame defenseman who was the tenth round pick (# 168 overall) of the Philadelphia Flyers at the 1978 National Hockey League Draft, was in charge from the late 1980s thru the early 1990s.

It could be noted that Gadowsky, who played his collegiate ice hockey at Colorado College before embarking on a professional career in the North American minor leagues and Europe, managed to recruit and train more University of Alaska – Fairbanks players who ultimately went on to appear in the vaunted National Hockey League than Lucia did.
