Hershey Completes Pre-Season Sweep In Chocolate Town

Lehigh Valley Phantoms defenseman SHAYNE GOSTISBEHERE (14), the highly touted blueliner who earned a gold medal with the United States squad at the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championships two winters ago, sends a shot towards Hershey Bears goaltender PHILIPP GRUBAUER, the 22-year-old who made two appearances for the senior national team of Germany at the 2014 IIHF World Championships last spring, during the American Hockey League exhibition game at the impressive Giant Center in central Pennsylvania …. The Brooks brothers? Huh??? … No, it should be rather clear to all by now that the guy who really owns the LEHIGH VALLEY PHANTOMS is Russian ‘mogul’ STANISLAV GALIEV.

For the second time in as many American Hockey League exhibition contests between the two intra-state adversaries, the 22-year-old Muscovite shot the game-winning goal for the Hershey Bears and denied Allentown’s new minor league franchise its first-ever victory for the second consecutive time.

It also true that the Phantoms actually had far more of the play for most of the first two periods at the Giant Center in Hershey but were consistently denied by the fine work of PHILIPP GRUBAUER, the German netminder who made 17 appearances (2.38 avg, .925 svpct) for the Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League last season and, barring a recall, figures to be a very important man for a Bears franchise that has won a league record 11 Calder Cup titles in the past but, most uncharacteristically, missed the AHL playoffs last season.

SHAYNE GOSTISBEHERE, the third round pick (# 78 overall) of the Philadelphia Flyers at the 2012 NHL Draft, made his first official appearance in the jersey of the Lehigh Valley Phantoms and was a standout for the visitors. The 21-year-old defenseman who celebrated the NCAA national championship title with Union College (42 ga, 9 go, 25 as, 34 pts) last season had at least seven shots on goal in Hershey. Gostisbehere was also unlucky to not open the scoring after clanking a puck off the iron in the second period.
